The New Disease - Mediocrity

Though I've for some time harbored the belief that mediocrity is applauded in society it hit home most recently when I was watching a movie.
In this movie a young gangly, un-coordinated and generally unattractive fellow takes his then stunning girlfriend to meet his family. After sitting down to dinner his brother and his fiance' ask her for an estimate on the wedding they envision having as she is an event planner.
After a moment's consideration she mentions a sum which makes the table erupt in expletives. They quite simply can't believe the price. Thereafter his brother says 'you must make quiet a good living then', timidly she replies 'sometimes....'
This my friends is a classic example of this disease that seems to permeate society. If you are rich and successful you should for some reason or other apologize for the fact. In fact you should do one better and conceal the fact completely.
This doesn't only apply to money. A friend of mine attended an ivy league school and you should here the scoffs he at times receives from people. "Oooo he's so smart, he went to an ivy league." Damn right he did and if you were 'smart' you'd ask him how he got there so you could do the same.
Now what we have is a society where mediocrity is not only accepted but encouraged and nurtured. Should somebody fail they are told 'aww it's okay, sometimes things like this just happen'. Pardon? How can something 'just happen'?
This why whenever millionaires or billionaires are talked about in most cases it is with scorn and disdain. The internet is bursting with documentaries highlighting apparent conspiracies that brought these people to wealth. 'It's the illuminati! It's the illuminati!' They scream in unison... How tiresome.
The fact of the matter is that if you want be successful you must make a firm decision that you are going to be successful or perish. That is all that is asked of you.
Any of this talk of 'luck', 'lucky breaks' or 'big breaks' that 'just happen' are figments of fantasy. Stories that should be dashed from the histories.
Nobody on earth is going to benefit from your mediocrity, not you and not those around you.
Excel and you will better yourself and the world in the process. Be mediocre and you'll be just one more number that walked down the boulevard of broken dreams to come to rest at the inn of shattered dreams.
